Runner-Up Performance for Brandon Sheppard at I-55
Capitalizing on an opportunity to return to the seat on his family-owned No. B5 on Saturday night, Brandon Sheppard recorded a runner-up finish at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 (Pevely, Mo.).
Sheppard would pressure race-long leader, Billy Moyer with four laps remaining as the duo entered lapped traffic but was unable to complete the pass for the top spot, finishing second.
In the seven starts he’s made this season in his Dennis G. Woodworth Attorney at Law No. B5 Valvoline/ The Goddard School for Early Childhood Development/ Pro Power Racing Engines/ Rocket Chassis Super Late Model, Sheppard has yet to finish outside the Top-5.
“We had a really good hot rod tonight,” said Sheppard, who made his first start since March 7. “We were able to get up to second there before [the surface] latched down to hard, and then once I got to second I was kind of hanging on there.”
After qualifying 10th overall in his group, Brandon rallied to a second-place finish in his heat race to earn the fifth starting spot for the $7,000-to-win feature.
By lap 15 of the 50-lap main event, Sheppard had advanced to second when he overtook Devin Moran, but there wasn’t sufficient racetrack left for him to seriously threaten Moyer outside lapped traffic.
The opportunity Sheppard had to pass Moyer came on lap 46. Moyer slipped slightly high entering turn one while navigating lapped traffic, allowing Sheppard to duck underneath. Moyer was able to recover and turn back Sheppard’s challenge for the win. Sheppard settled for a runner-up finish, 1.002 seconds behind Moyer. Moran was third, with Tanner English and Kyle Bronson completing the Top-5.
“The track was rubbered up at that point and he was behind that lapped car,” Sheppard said of his attempt to thwart Moyer from the win. “I got underneath him, be he was in the rubber and I was down in the dust and he took off. Then he got by the lapped car and that was all there was to it.”
Brandon Sheppard returns to the World of Outlaws (WoO) Morton Buildings Late Model Series tour this week. Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 is slated to host a Friday-Saturday doubleheader paying $6,000 and $10,000-to-win.
