Brandon Sheppard grabs WoO prelim at 81 Speedway
Brandon Sheppard entered his Sheppard Riggs Racing No. B5 Late Model into battle with the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series on Friday afternoon at 81 Speedway (Park City, Kan.) for the two-day Wichita Late Model Showdown.
With the 38-car field split into two groups for a pair of preliminary features, Brandon laid down the second-fastest lap in his group behind Kyle Bronson to lock into his prelim. Taking command of the lead on lap seven after Kyle Bronson slipped over the cushion, Sheppard soared to his second win of the season, which came ahead of Ryan Gustin, Bronson, Brian Shirley, and Chris Madden. He pocketed $5,000.
On Saturday, Sheppard edged his way into the $30,000-to-win Wichita Late Model Showdown feature with the fourth-and-final transfer spot in his heat. Rolling off 13th, Brandon ran into early electrical issues that sidelined him on lap 11.
For the weekend finale on Sunday at Off Road Speedway (Norfolk, Neb.), Brandon’s fourth-to-second run in his heat race positioned him on the second row for the main event. With $10,000 on the line, Sheppard grabbed the lead on the third circuit and led the next 22 laps before a charging Bobby Pierce stole the top spot on lap 25. He went onto place second behind Pierce with Shane Clanton rounding out the podium.
Brandon sits in seventh in the latest WoO point standings.
